How and When to Apply for MBA Programs at Top Universities
You might be wondering why there are different application rounds, and which round to apply for. Well as far as I understand the concept behind multiple application rounds is to ease out the work load of the Adcoms (admission committee). Otherwise universities will receive high volume of applications just before the single application deadline. Multiple application rounds thereby distribute the workload through the whole application window (say 6 – 8 months). More importantly multiple applications rounds also provide some backup chances. Let’s say you apply to three schools in Round 1 (in September or October 2016). You will then get your decision by December. If you cannot make to your desired school (or any of them) in the Round 1, you can still apply to other schools in the Round 2 and get admitted. There is no point of applying to a same school in both Round 1 and Round 2 (or Round 3); in that case you can apply to the same school next year.
Now let’s come to the point which round you should apply for. The best thing would be of course to apply as early as possible (just like the cases of getting early bird discounts). However, that does not mean that you should rush through your essays or with a lower GMAT score (as per as the cut-off) and then submit just on the last date. That will hamper you’re your chances significantly. Apply when you are ready, but it should be early enough.
