Doctoral (PhD) student position in Molecular Neuro-Pharmacology with focus on Parkinson’s Disease – Karolinska Institute
The research project will focus on molecular neuropharmacological studies on the role of prosaposin and the GPR37 receptor in Parkinson´s disease. The program uses a wide of methodologies including intracellular dynamics and signalling of molecules and their direct interactions or aggregation, studies of animal models and use of patient samples. The PhD student will investigate the role of 7TM receptor-mediated processes in the aetiologies of Parkinson’s disease. In particular, the role of GPR37 and its putataive ligand prosaposin in neurodegeneration shall be studied. Various molecular and cellular assays for enzymatic activities, receptor trafficking and signalling and function will be employed in vitro and in vivo. Biomarkers will be looked for in patient samples. Successful applicants will generate data that guide the development of novel approaches to be tested in animal models of Parkinsonism.

Doctoral (PhD) student position in Mechanisms behind Alzheimer’s Disease – Karolinska Institute
The project aims to explore how known risk factors for Alzheimer’s disease (AD) contribute to the disease pathology. Our project has two major objectives: 1) To investigate the biological roles of cholesterol metabolites in brain and their relation to AD pathology and 2) To explore how alterations in insulin signalling / glucose metabolism participate AD neurodegenerative processes. This project involves a wide range of molecular, cellular and transgenic technologies and has a strong translational focus. As models of investigation we have several transgenic mice, human samples (brain tissue, CSF and plasma samples and fibroblasts), as well as in primary cultures and cell lines.
